Former Alpha area man died in California
August J. Winter, 88, a former Alph-Waucoma area resident, died Saturday, March 22 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Stapel of Corona, California.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Richfield, with the pastor, Rev. John Wogsland, officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery at Stapleton. Friends may call at the Emerson-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner beginning Thursday (today) noon.

August John Winter was born July 23, 1886, the son of J. Henry and Engel Lange Winter in Stapleton Township, Chickasaw County, Iowa.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Richfield.

On January 6, 1909, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Pleggenkuhle at the Pleggenkuhle homestead near the Richfield church. The couple farmed north of Alpha until retiring and moving into Alpha in 1946. In November, 1970, the couple moved to California to make their home with their daughter.

Mrs. Winter's death occurred March 21, 1972.

Survivors include one son, Oliver of Waucoma; two daughters, Celia, Mrs. Clarence Miller of Sumner and Darlene, Mrs. George Stapel of Corona, Calif.; 9 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, an infant son, his sister, Caroline, three brothers, Henry, William, and Fred, his grandson, Arlin and a great granddaughter, Denise.
